Teaching Unity

I have been asked to teach more and more classes at the Academy of Art and as of next semester I will be quitting working in the computer lab to be able to free myself up to spend more time lecturing. This will also give me more time to work on some personal art projects and write more short stories. I hope to make significant progress on my short film as well as put together a new visual effects artist reel to explore re-entering the game industry or possibly venturing into feature film effects.
I have been teaching the Unity game engine in some of my Advanced Texture and Lighting classes and I have come to appreciate it as a very easy way to create an environment in which to showcase my artwork (and of course encourage my students to do so as well) and at the same time illustrate to a potential employer that I am capable of incorporating functional artwork into a game engine that can very easily be streamed to a browser. I was asked to teach this class a week before the start of the semester so I didn't have any assets to provide at the time so I told my students I would try to crank out some architecture for them while they modeled and textured the props. I spent a few classes discussing visual effects textures and materials like scrolling UVs and such to spice up the environment and to make my students more versatile. I plan to use Unity in my free time as a virtual sandbox to practice and showcase my skills.

You will need to download and install the Unity web player but it is extremely fast and you can be running around in the level within a couple of minutes.
